On 15th May 1862 three experimental Ironclad warships USS Monitor , USS Galena and USS Naugatuck tried to force a passage past the Confederate positions at Drewry’s Bluff. The stakes were high , if the Ironclads had got through they would have been able to shell the Confederate capital Richmond just 7 miles north of the fort making the city untenable . The Monitor, the heaviest armed vessel moved close to the fort but was unable to elevate her guns sufficiently enough to bombard the fort located 90 feet above the river so was forced to drop back to where the other vessels were anchored in order to fire . The day did not go as expected for the Union flotilla , the experimental Ironclad sloop Galena fared badly in the exchange as the forts guns were able to pierce her light armour, also the 100lb Parrot Rifle onboard the Naugatuck burst early in the engagement injuring some of the crew . The Galena bravely fought on but eventually she sustained such heavy casualties she was forced to retire. Pithead propose making models of the three ironclads that took part in this action and we will also be making a model of the Fort at Drewry’s Bluff . Anyone interested obtaining a set of these models can contact us at vanilla55@ sky.com and register their support for the project.
